South Brunswick Township to honor 9/11 victims
by Sean Ruppert, South Brunswick Post, Staff Writer
Seven years after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, South Brunswick is working to honor the victims — three who lived in town — of that day with a ceremony at the township’s Sept. 11 memorial.

The ceremony will be held on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the memorial located in front of the municipal building on Ridge Road in Monmouth Junction.

The ceremony will feature comments from local officials and South Brunswick police chaplain Rabbi Mendy Carlebach. There will also be a moment of silence and a presentation from the South Brunswick Police Department Honor Guard, according to Ron Schmalz, township public affairs coordinator.

”It’s our community, we came together to design the memorial, and each year it is important to come together and reflect on all that were lost on that day,” Mr. Schmalz said.

The township is also looking to raise funds for the memorial, which was dedicated in 2005. The site features a three-piece fountain, designed by Amado Batour, of Somerset, and was chosen from 28 artists’ submissions in 2004. The memorial’s blocks are meant to symbolize the three South Brunswick victims of the attack, Kenneth Ledee, of Monmouth Junction; Toyena Skinner, of Kingston; and Mukul Agarwala, of Kendall Park, who did not know each other.
The site also features a brick walkway and three benches.

Those who wish to donate can purchase bricks for $100-a-piece to be placed on the walk. Each brick can be inscribed with a message, up to three lines long with 13 characters in each line, according to Mr. Schmalz. He said that about half of the bricks have been sold on the walk.

A bench is also available for purchase, for a price of $25,000.

Mr. Schmalz said that $25 of the cost of each brick goes toward the materials, and the remaining $75 is placed in a fund to maintain the memorial and keep the fountain working properly.

At Tuesday’s Township Council meeting, Councilwoman Carol Barrett said she had purchased two bricks for her parents, and encouraged residents to donate to the memorial.

”It gives me great comfort to see their bricks there when I am leaving the municipal building,” she said.

Those interested in purchasing bricks can do so by contacting Mr. Schmalz at 732-329-4000 ext. 7275 or by email at rschmalz@sbtnj.org
